Inlays and Onlays A custom-made porcelain restoration, such as an inlay or onlay, may be the best treatment for a back tooth
that has been severely damaged by decay or wear. An inlay or onlay can be used to replace a lost filling, as
well. In some cases, it is a better option than another filling. An inlay fits within the contours of the tooth, while
an onlay also covers the chewing surface, or cusp tips. The procedure: The damaged back tooth is prepared and shaped to receive the inlay or onlay. An impression
is taken, and a special plaster model is prepared. From that model, a custom inlay or onlay is made. The inlay
or onlay is checked for fit, and then cemented to the tooth. Any necessary adjustments and final polishing are
completed during the last visit of the procedure. |
